Continuing with the portable DVD player news is two new ones from Panasonic, the "DVD-LX95" and "DVD-LS90." They're far more expensive than the 20,000 yen Evergreen model we talked about, but thankfully make up for the price difference by offering a far more complete package.

Matsushita Electric Industries Corporation will release two portable DVD players with 9" widescreen TFT LCDs. Both are Open Price. The estimated retail price and release date of the "DVD-LX95" is 80,000 yen on June 15th, and the "DVD-LS90" for 60,000 yen on July 1st. Both models include remote controls.

DVD-LX95

This is a portable DVD player with integrated TV tuner and widescreen 9" alpha-Si TFT LCD. The screen is "free style" for simple adjustment to make it easier to see. Furthermore, the TV tuner supports the reception of VHF, UHF and CATV signals.

The outstanding characteristic of this unit is the inclusion of an FM transmitter to broadcast audio to FM radios. When using the player in the car, the audio of the DVD-Video that is currently playing will be transmitted to the car stereo, where it can then be enjoyed on the car's speakers. Furthermore, because a car DC adapter is also included, videos can be enjoyed without having to worry about battery life.

Playable discs, besides DVD-Video, include DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM (VR), DVD-RW (Video/VR), DVD-R (Video), DVD+R (Video) and DVD+RW (Video).

Also, the unit can playback JPEG still image and MPEG-4 video files recorded on DVD-RAM, as well as MP3, WMA, JPEG, and MPEG-4 files stored on CD-R/RW. Also supported is the "HighMAT" Level 2 digital contents compatibility standard. An SD card slot is also furnished, where the playback of JPEG and MPEG-4 files is supported.

A "VUADBLS90" lithium ion battery is included, and charging it takes roughly 5 hours. This will allow for 6 hours of DVD playback or 7.5 hours of TV/SD card playback. Also available is the "DY-DBLS55 (26,250 yen)" large capacity battery, allowing for 10 hours of DVD playback or 12.5 hours of TV/SD card playback.

The external dimensions of the unit are 235.4 x 178.6 x 39mm (W x D x H). It weighs about 1,140g. Output jacks include a Composite video/analog audio (stereo mini) and optical digital. An antenna cord and car DC adapter are included.

DVD-LS90

Like the LX95, this unit is a portable DVD player with 9" widescreen alpha-Si TFT LCD. It also uses the Free Style screen. Though the unit omits the FM transmitter, TV tuner, and SD card slot, a DC adapter is still included.

Playable discs include DVD-Video, DVD-RAM (VR mode), DVD-RW (video/VR), DVD-R (Video), DVD+R (video), and DVD+RW (video). Also supported is the playback of MP3, WMA and JPEG files stored on CDs, as well as HighMAT Level 2. And though the unit supports the display of JPEG still images stored on DVD-RAM, the playback of MPEG-4 videos is not supported. It also does not support DVD-Audio.

A "VUADBLS50" lithium ion battery is included. After its maximum 4 hour charge time, it can play DVD for about 3 hours. The "DY-DBLS55" large capacity battery brings this DVD playback time to about 10 hours.

The external dimensions are 235.4 x 178.6 x 39mm (W x D x H). It weighs about 999g. It features a Composite/analog audio (stereo mini) output jack, as well as an optical digital audio output.
