Teac has announced a new portable DVD recorder that is 26.7mm thick. Nice!

Teac Corporation has begun sale of the "DV-R05" slot-loading DVD recorder on their direct sale website, "TEAC online." Sale will be limited to 500 units. Though the retail price is 37,800 yen, the unit will be priced at 29,800 yen for an opening sale at TEAC online.

The DV-R05 is a slot-loading portable DVD recorder with dimensions of 142 x 196.3 x 26.7mm (W x D x T), and it weighs about 680g. The drive supports both vertical and horizontal operation. Teac has said that "it is in the smallest class of consumer DVD recorders." It cannot connect with a PC.

AV inputs/outputs are provided by a 4-prong minijack. With the included cable, it can input and output composite video and analog audio. The recorder also features a DV input for direct connection to digital video cameras.

The recorder does not have a TV tuner, and is designed to record video from external sources. Because of this, it can be easily operated by just pushing the "record" button -- input video and audio signals will be written to DVD or CD. WIth the auto record mode, the drive can also automatically start recording when it detects a signal being input to it.

The recording format is DVD+VR, where the supported media is DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. DVD+VR can also be written to DVD-R/RW. It does not support dual layered discs or 8cm discs.

Five recording modes are available: HQ, SP, LP, EP, and SLP. The unit can also record Video-CD or SVCD to CD-R/RW discs, and also supports the creation of audio CDs from the line input.

Though there are no video editing functions, the unit does support overwriting DVD+-R media. With the included remote controller, title input can also be accomplished (english/numeric only). Furthermore, chapters can be automatically set in intervals of five minutes from five to thirty minutes.

For playback, the unit supports DVD-Video, Audio CD, MP3, and JPEG. Power is supplied by the included AC adapter, where the operating power consumption is under 20W; the idle power consumption is under 3W.
