Sony Marketing has announced 2 new PSX models. While the basic specifications of the 250GB DESR-7700 and 160GB DESR-5700 remain unchanged, new functionality allows recorded programs and "x-appli" video content to be converted to MPEG-4 format and copied to Memory Stick for viewing on portable devices such as the PSP. Unfortunately, the encoding process can take up to 5 hours for 1 hour of video. Good one, Sony! Sales begin 15 April.

Sony Marketing will begin sales of two new models of the PSX HDD/DVD recorder from 15 April. The new models add support for copying recorded programs and "x-appli" video content to Memory Stick for viewing on Sony Computer Entertainment's Playstation Portable (PSP). There will be no recommended retail prices for the new models but the higher-spec "DESR-7700" is expected to sell for approximately 80,000 yen while the lower-spec "DESR-5700" will sell for approximately 60,000 yen.

Hardware specifications, including HDD capacity, remain unchanged in comparison to the previous DESR-7500/5500 models. The higher-spec DESR-7700 has a 250GB HDD and an analogue terrestrial TV tuner with ghost reduction circuitry. It is also equipped with BS analogue tuner and DV inputs. The lower-spec "DESR-5700" model has a 160GB HDD and is not equipped with ghost reduction circuitry or DV input.

The main feature of the new models is the addition of functionality to convert video to MPEG-4 (MPEG-4SP) format. Video contents on the PSX can be converted to Memory Stick video format and taken with you on portable devices such as the PSP. For example, programs recorded using x-appli's "x-Omakase/MaruRoku", music videos created from digital camera photos by "x-Pict Story" or video taken with a digital video camera can be copied to Memory Stick.

For playback on the PSP, dubbing must be done using a Memory Stick Duo and an adapter. Using a 512MB Memory Stick PRO Duo, up to 110 minutes of video can be recorded. In additon, Sony has also confirmed, but does not guarantee, that playback is possible on the CLIE PEG-VZ90 and the Cybershot DSC-M1.

However (ed: and, believe me, this is a BIG however), as re-encoding occurs during the dubbing process, the time required for dubbing is approximately 5x the playback time for 768kbps files and approximately 4x the playback time for 384kbps files. For example, dubbing a 60 min program at high bitrate (768kbps) will take approximately 5 hours. In addition, although timer recording can commence during the re-encoding process, it is not possible to program new timer recordings or start a standalone recording. As encoded files are stored on the HDD, Sony recommends starting the encoding process before you go to bed!
