After centuries on self-imposed isolation, even today almost 150 years after Matthew Perry and the US Navy opened Japan to the West, many Japanese think that they’re unique. Thus, they’re a little surprised to see things like a cell phone from a half Japanese company, Sony Ericsson, at a mobile phone fair.
Are the Premini and the J300i the same thing? Is that possible?
Japanese passing by the Sony Ericsson booth at CeBIT 2005 were a little surprised to see the J300i.
Hmm… this design is familiar…
Where have a seen this before?
It looks like…
The Premini
The GSM phone, the J300i, closely resembles the small form phone released in Japan, the Premini. The principle behind the J300i and the Premini is the same, it’s for a user who wants a mobile phone, but doesn’t want all the bells and whistles that many phones now come with.
It features a 65,000 color display and supports MMS and Java. There is no camera.
The J300i is slated for second quarter release, but the price has not been decided. When the staff at the exhibition booth were asked about its close resemblance to a Japanese phone, they replied that they weren’t sure about it.
One difference between the Japanese Premini and the J300i is the changeable covers on the J300i. The back and front covers can be changed using the Style Up Cover (sold separately), giving an instant change to one’s existing phone. There were many different versions at the booth, leading to many Premini fans in Japan who’d like to be able to change covers.

The standard issues
Several J300i’s with covers
The K300i and the K600i. Coincidently there were many round body phones at the Sony Ericsson booth. On the left is the K300i, which goes on sale in mid-March. On the right is a design similar to Vodafone’s “nudio” phone, the K600i. It goes on sale in June.
