Fujitsu has announced they'll be selling their LCD unit to Sharp. Though the details of the sale are yet to become known, one thing is evident: I didn't even know Fujitsu made LCDs.

Fujitsu Corporation and Sharp Corporation reached an agreement on the 7th for Fujitus's LCD device business to be assigned to Sharp. They will hold various negotiations to discuss the terms, and will complete a formal contract by March. They have not disclosed the price of the sale.

The development, production, and sale divisions of Fujitsu Display Technologies Corporation (FDTC), a child company of Fujitsu, as well as the FDTC-related divisions at Fujitsu Labs Corporation will be assigned to Sharp.

FDTC had focused on high-resolution displays for PCs, and was also developing MVA (Multi-domain Verticle Alignment) panel technology. However, with the decline of panel prices in the PC display market, it had been difficult for the company to remain profitable; the division will instead be sold to Sharp, who has been focusing on their LCD division.

Fujitsu has already sold their plasma display division to Hitachi, and has already announced their sale of their LCD production equipment division to Alvac; the company plans to focus on their information communication/service divisions.
