Damn, this is cool. Fujitsu has actually managed to make electronic paper look like a feasible technology. More details (though they are few, for now) and pictures inside.

Fujitsu Labs has created a successfully created an experimental concept model of electonic paper, with the same print quality as copy paper. The newly developed display ingredients have allowed for basically the same whiteness and contrast levels as normal paper media. They are aiming for "practical implementation" around 2006.

Electronic paper is designed to have both the same readability and portability as existing paper media, and Fujitsu has successfully increased the whitenesss and contrast levels to effectively being the same as traditional paper. The newly developed display ingredients have a white ratio of over 80, and contrast ratio of over 15, which when compared to normal paper, does not show too much inferiority. Also, with the addition of color by applying voltage, and erasing the contents by reversing the polarity of the material, it has a "memory effect" meaning that even if the power is turned off the contents will remain. Because of this property the conservation of electric power has been made possible, which is one of the key ingredients to the success of electronic paper.

Fujitsu has said that they plan for practical implementation around 2006, and plans to create an electronic paper that can easily be (re)written, has a clear display, is easy to read and carry, easy to change, with their driving force being the creation a completely paperless office environment by elimination of current paper media and displays.
