Oki Data has announced their new C Series of LED printers, which produce near laser quality printing but also can print in color, for the Japanese market. According to the Japanese article they are aimed at the business sector in Japan. However, by visiting the Oki Data USA color printer webpage [1], it's possible to see that they're already for sale in the US.
On January 19th 2005, Oki Data Corporation (Oki) announced their new line of business LED (light-emiting diode) printers, the OKI C Series. The three models – the C9150; and the C5200n and C3100 – will be available from early February.
Until now, Oki was developing printers for its Microline brand, but the high-end market is comparatively crowded. However, the company lacked an A3 size printer, which makes up about 70% of the low-end market. “We were always looking on from the sidelines” commented Yoshihiko Hashimoto, Managing Director. While completely developing the C series overseas, Oki is relying on the C series to increase their share of the domestic (Japan) business printer market. Between the three models, Oki hopes to sell 30,000 printers in 2005.
The top-of-the-line C9150dn is a color printer that prints up to A3 size and features a maximum resolution of 1200dpi x 600dpi. The interface features a parallel port, a USB 2.0 port, and an Ethernet port. When compared to competing products, it measures 666 x 626 x 460mm (W x D x H). Somewhat large-sized, it retails for the low cost of 197,400 yen (about US $2,000). As far as printing speed is concerned, , the C9150dn can print up to 30 pages/min color and up to 37 pages/min black and white. It can handle dual-sided printing and its “Office Document Mode” adjusts colors for business documents automatically.
For handling A4 size documents, the C5200n (104,790 yen) and C3100 (83,790 yen) are appropriate. The C5200n has a maximum printing speed of16 pages/min color and 24 pages/min black and white, the fastest in its class according to company representatives. Both offer the high resolution of 1200 x 600dpi that the C9150 offers and are equipped with a USB 2.0 port, while the C5200n also features an Ethernet port.
Additionally, purchasers receive a one and a half year extended warranty from the time of purchase. This free offer lasts until the end of March.
An industry first, Oki is implementing a cartridge recycling program, which will start from March. This is a collaborative effort between Oki and Netmile [2]. When donating used Oki devices and accessories, users will accrue points through the Net Mile system. By 2006, Oki hopes to increase its recycling rate to 70%.
Excluding, Oki’s current Microline brand printers, Microline will focus on color post-script printers for DTP professionals. For business, their mainstay printers will be the new C series.
Oki’s President Motohiko Maeno, citing the investment in developing the C series cited the ever-advancing PC business, but wondered if only if black and white printers would be used. In an effort to improve efficiency at the office by allowing color documents to be used more often, the C series represents an important step in the right direction.
