There's four new au handsets on the horizon. The:

  • W31SA, with music playback functionality
  • W31K, going after ease of use
  • A5509T, with emphasis on security
  • A1404S, with an FM radio
Both "W" models are CDMA 1X WIN, and both "A" models are CDMA 2000 1X. Perhaps someone with more expertise can tell me the differences...
Either way, these appear to be standard fare. The design of the W31K caught my eye, but that's about it. Perhaps more interesting than any of the phones themselves is Chaku Flash, allowing for Flash animations to be played when a call comes in.

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular will release four new cellular phones beginning in late January. The "W31SA" with audio playback and "W31K" with ease of use both support CDMA 1X WIN, and the security-focused "A5509T" and FM-radio equipped "A1404S" support CDMA2000 1X. Additionally, "Chaku Flash," enabling sound and Flash animation to be played when there is an incoming call, will be introduced.

Sanyo's "W31SA" contains an FM radio and music playback function support SD-Audio. This handset features an IC recorder function, background reception of e-mail, support for a function called Advanced Wnn V2, is equipped with a 1.3MP autofocus CMOS camera, and a 2.2" QVGA LCD. The size is 49 x 98 x 23mm, and it weighs roughly 117g. It is planned for release in late February.

The "W31K" is a Kyocera CDMA 1X WIN handset placing an importance on "friendly design," intended to help with ease of use on a universal design basis. It likewise supports background reception of e-mail, and is also equipped with an FM radio. A 1.3MP CMOS camera and 2.4" QVGA LCD top it off. The size is 50 x 95 x 27mm, and it weighs about 125g (tentative). Release is planned for early March.

Furthermore, both the "W31SA" and "W31K" support "Chaku Flash" and "Chaku Uta Full," as well as the playback of 3D surround functions.

Continuing is Toshiba's "A5509T," a CDMA 2000 1X supporting handset with the same "friendly design" as the W31K. A "Restriction Mode" can be used allowing for detailed restrictions when, for example, the phone will be used in a corporate setting or by a child. It offers up a 1.3MP CMOS camera and 2.4" QVGA screen. The size is 50 x 98 x 26mm, and it weighs around 113g. Expect to see its release in early February.

Finally, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications' "A1404S" contains an FM radio. It furnishes a 2.3" QVGA LCD and 0.32MP CMOS camera, and supports the "Style-UP Panel" interchangable platings. Stereo earphones with a switch are also included in the package. The size is 48 x 93 x 24mm, and the weight is 107g. It is planned for release in late January.

The newly offered "Chaku Flash" is a function that will play sound and an animation with Flash to go with incoming calls. Supported handsets are the "W31SA" and "W31K," and various animations will be played; such as for low battery, varying signals, and even in response to certain information from the opposite party (on a call).
