Kyocera begins tests of "iBurst" system

Do we really need another wireless data transmission standard? Kyocera apparently thinks so; their "iBurst" system is slightly slower than wireless LAN (while still faster than 3G cellular), with a slightly wider range than wireless LAN (though still not as wide range as 3G cellular).

In other words, iBurst is the middle ground between cellular and wireless LAN.



Kyocera has obtained a permit from the government to begin experiments of the "iBurst System," a wireless communication technology with maximum downstread of 1Mbps, and has begun testing the technology inside of their Yokohama office.

The "iBurst System" is a wireless communication technology said to have a data receiving capability of a maximum of 1Mbps. Based o­n a communication standard called TDD, a service using iBurst began in March of this year in Australia for business purposes, where Kyocera offers base stations and PC cards to communications industry figures.

The band used during experiments is the 2GHz frequency band. The experimental license allots a year for "something effective," a maximum downstream of 2Mbps by next year, and a maximum downstream of 10Mbps by 2009. However, Kyocera has said "it's not like, in the future, Kyocera itself will be offering any sort of business services as a communications industry body."
