It's been a long time coming but it looks like NTT Docomo has finally gotten around to releasing a W-CDMA/GSM mobile phone. The NEC N900iG is firmly targeted at the business sector and, as a result, is available in only one colour - ocean blue. Apart from the dual-network functionality, most of the features of this phone are pretty ho-hum.
NTT Docomo will begin sales of a dual-mode NEC handset that support W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS, the "N900iG", from 25 December. In conjunction with the launch, international roaming services will be expanded and it will become possible to use i-mode services overseas.
The N900iG is a dual-mode handset from NEC that supports W-CDMA and tri-band GSM/GPRS (800/900/1800). Using GPRS networks, i-mode can be used overseas. The handset has a vMAICOVICON camera with an effective resolution of 1.24 megapixels as well as a 0.1 megapixel CMOS camera for video calls. The main display is a 2.2" 65,536 colour QVGA LCD and the sub-display is an approximately 1.0" 65,536 colour TFT LCD. A miniSD card slot is also provided but a miniSD card is not included with the handset.
Continuous standby time is approximately 150 hours for FOMA mode and approximately 110 hours for GSM mode. Continuous talk time is 105 minutes for FOMA mode and 120 minutes for GSM mode. The handset is 130 x 50 x 28 mm in size and weighs approximately 132 grams. Only one body colour - ocean blue - is available.
By default, the handset will switch automatically between W-CDMA and GSM modes but it can also be manually set to use the W-CDMA or GSM mode only. The setting menu is accessed by holding down the "MULTI Key" at the lower left of the directional keypad. In addition, using the "remote time setting", you can specify your destination and have the local time displayed alongside Japan time on the standby screen.
Other features include a "International dialling assist function" to support use of the handset with international roaming services. This function automatically adds a pre-registered country code to the dialled number when a call is made. Up to three country codes can be registered and one selected for use depending on where you are. The function can only be used with phone numbers registered in the address book and not with number inputted manually.
The phone operating system is a proprietary NEC OS the same as that used for the N900i and not the Linux OS used by the N900iL and N901i. It provides similar functionality to the N900i such as templated "Deco-mail", up to 500kB i-appli and "Kyara-den". The "T9" system in used for Japanese input - this is not the "T9 direct" system used by the N900iS but the same version as used in the N900i.
