TechJapan will be moving hosts this week. Hopefully I'll be able to pull it off with no downtime whatsoever, but there's a chance that may not happen.
Either way, just a heads up. I'll let everyone know again once I actually "pull the switch." We're leaving Globat (our current host) due to non-existent customer service and their daily bandwith limitation buried within the Terms of Service. Our new host will be DreamHost. Hopefully things will work out better for us. Also, we've got 120GB of monthly bandwith through DreamHost, giving us quite a bit of room to grow. Read inside for more changes that will be taking place.
A new host is just one of many changes happening to TechJapan this winter. We've got plenty of ideas on our plate, and we'll certainly be implementing a lot of them.
- One of the biggest changes to the site will be migration to PostNuke .750 from our current .726 version. With PN .750 comes implementation of a number of changes. Most of these are infrastructure related, however, meaning that as an end-user, you likely won't see a big difference. What does come with PN .750 is universal support for "ShortURLs," meaning rather than seeing the traditional http://www.techjapan.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=742&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 [1] type URL, it will instead be shortened to something like http://www.techjapan.com/Article742.html [2] . All old links, of course, will still work, so you needn't worry about running across a fleet of those.
- Navigation changes will also take place. Scott (sar7501) and I have decided that the top bar of the site (where those grey "home," "topics," and other buttons currently sit) will become the new place for your navigation elements (which are currently at the left side, "Home," "Your Account," and so forth).
- Graphical changes are in store as well. You'll notice these when they happen, so I don't need to say much. Either way, we do like our current theme, and we'll be sticking with it -- the graphical changes to take place are only minor.
- A new frontpage and block layout. We're going for a more efficient usage of sidebar space.
- Other generic improvements to existing modules, such as a private messaging system worth a damn. Also, we're still working on getting threaded commenting back.
- Google AdWords, to cover some costs around these parts. Don't worry, they'll be entirely unintrusive, and easy to ignore. We're also considering giving members the ability to disable them entirely.
- Another big announcement, but you'll see what that is when it happens :)
