Maxell, Victor/JVC and TDK have all released new data DVD media this week. Readon for the wrap-up on Maxell's 16x 4.7GB DVD+R, VIctor/JVC's 6x 4.7GB DVD-RW and TDK's 2.4x 8.5GB DVD+R DL media.

Maxell 16x DVD+R media

Maxell will begin sales of DVD+R data discs with Philips Format Verification Laboratory certification from November. Two products have been prepared, the standard "D+R47D" and the inkjet-printable "D+R47PWD", and they will be sold in 5-disc packs with no set retail price.

The DVD+R media supports 16x recording. It meets the quality standards set by the DVD+R standards certification body, the Philips Verification Laboratory and has passed their certification tests. It is reportedly the "world's first product to receive formal certification."

The LTHS (Low Thermal Interference and High Sensitivity) recording film technology used in the new 16x DVD+R media controls thermal interference during high-speed recording and improves sensitivity by 10% in comparison to previous models. In addition to realising stable recording characteristics over the 1x - 16 x speed range, a lower error rate has also been achieved for disc substrate production using a newly-developed "cooled, uniform pressing method".

For the inkjet-printable media, the use of the "Hiro-biro print label" increases the disc print area by reducing the internal diameter from 41 mm to 21 mm. This increases the user's freedom with respect to label layout.

First 6x DVD-RW media from Victor/JVC

Victor/JVC will begin sales of "VD-W47H" DVD-RW media that support 6x recording from early December. The media will have no set retail price but the street price is estimated to be approximately 1000 yen.

The DVD-RW data media conform to the "DVD-RW Version 1.2, Optional specifications 6X-speed DVD-RW, Revision 3.0 (DVD-RW Ver 1.2/6X)" standard. The "VD-W47H" is the first 6x DVD-RW media to be announced. Using the newly-developed "HS-JPC6X" high-speed crystalline recording film, 6x recording is also supported. By optimising the setting of the initial crystallisation level, stable jitter characteristics are also displayed.

A new disc manufacturing method, "Advanced JIPS6X", was developed and used to improve reliability and stability. In addition, original U-shaped gutter press technology was refined to support 6x-speed disc manufacture and achieve stable control.

Discs that conform to the DVD-RW Ver 1.2/6X standard, like 4x media, cannot be recorded to by constant-velocity DVD-RW drives. In addition, recording is not strictly possible in 2x DVD-RW drives but a firmware update will enable recording in some cases. Support for 4x DVD-RW drives depends on drive specifications.

TDK - 8.5GB DVD+R DL media

TDK will begin sales of "DVD+R85DLN" DVD+R DL data discs from 25 November. A "DVD+R85DLX5N" 5-disc pack has also been prepared. The media will have no set retail price but expected street prices are approximately 1400 yen (single disc) and 6000 yen (5-disc pack).

The DVD+R DL media are single-sided, two-layer discs with 8.5GB capacity. The recording speed is 2.4x. A low error rate has been realised by using film manufacturing technologies to produce a reflective film on both layers.

In addition, through the use of high sensitivity pigments with superior stability and durability for the recording surface and high-precision substrate-pressing technology, TDK has been able to "achieve stable, efficient operation in supported DVD+R drives."
