Pentax's low-priced but full-featured digital SLR for beginners, the *ist Ds, will go on sale from 19 November. The *ist Ds has a number of new functions, including an "Auto Picture Mode", in comparison to the camera on which it is based, the pro-sumer *ist D. Of course, it also has the classical Pentax shutter sound and action.  Pentax Corporation has announced that sales of the "*ist Ds" digital SLR camera, originally scheduled for early November, will begin from 19 November. The jointly-announced "smc PENTAX-DA Zoom 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL" digital SLR lens will also go on sale on the same day. The *ist Ds is low-priced version of the *ist D digital SLR camera that is targeted at inexperienced camera users. According to Pentax, the *ist Ds is the world's smallest and lightest digital SLR camera with an interchangeable lens. No recommended retail price has been set but the street price is expected to be approximately 90,000 yen. The image sensor is an APS-C size CCD with an effective resolution of 6.1 megapixels. The lens mount is a Pentax K AF mount. In contrast to the *ist D, SD memory is the recordable media instead of Compact Flash. In addition, the LCD monitor has been enlarged to 2 in. from the *ist D's 1.8 in. unit. A number of new functions have also been added including an "Auto Picture Mode" for automatic setting of exposure, image quality etc. and the ability to switch between centre-weighted and spot metering.
