We've seen LCD monitors with billion-color capabilities before [1], but NEC's new TFT display module is strikingly different: NEC LCD Technology Corporation has announced the development of a TFT LCD display module that supports 10bit input/output for each RGB color. Using a 10bit resolution LCD display source driver from NEC Electronics, it can control each RGB color to 1024 different levels. So, the simultaneous color display capability weighs in at 1,734,700,000 colors. The module is also equipped with an internal 12bit Look Up Table (LUT), enabling it to educe these 1.7347 billion colors from a total of 685 billion. Also, thanks to NEC's independently developed Super Advanced-Super Fine TFT technology, a brightness of 235cd/m2 has been achieved, as well as a viewing angle of 170 degrees, and color zone 72% that of NTSC. The resolution is QXGA (2048 x 1536). According to NEC, professional high-end LCD display modules did contain 8bit in/outputs and 10bit LUT processors, but this module realizes a higher color resolution thansk to the 10bit in/output and 12bit LUT. Furthermore, this product will be on display at the "FPD International 2004" exhibition to take place at Pacifico Yokohama from October 20th to the 22nd.
