Uncork those bottles of champagne, because Optware announced on the 7th that they will receive about 360,000,000 yen in investments from 6 companies including Matsushita Electric Industries and FujiFilm.
Who is Optware? You may remember our article from a couple months ago. [1] Or you may not. Long story short, Optware is developing technology to store approximately 1TB of data on a holographic disc.
Optware Corporation announced on the 7th that they will receive about 360,000,000 yen [2] in financing from 6 firms including Matsushita Electric Industries and FujiFilm Corporation. Details about the financing have not been announced.
Optware is a development-oriented venture firm established in 1999. Their capital stock is approximately 142,915,000 yen [3]. The company announced in July that they had, for the first time in the world, successfuly written and read movie data to a reflective holographic light disc using a holographic technology dubbed the colinear system.
The six companies to invest in the company are Taiwan's CMC Magnetics, East Asia Synthetics Corporation, Pulstec Manufacturing Corporation, FujiFilm Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industries Corporation, and Marubeni Corporation. Regarding this investment, Optware commented, "As an industry partner, we will advance with positive cooperation with each company, by allocating the funds to the development costs of holographic light discs, and accelerate the development of key devices intended for commercialization."
Regarding the investment, Mr. Shinichi Tanaka, head of Matsushita's Media Control System Development Center, said "Although the recording density of optical discs have been increased by making the 'light spots' smaller, Blu-Ray Disc has reached the final level of this approach. Volumetric holograms, a new approach, are expected to rapidly increase this recording density. Optware's technology has indicated an accurate direction, so we have high anticipations for the future."
