What was once 17 inches is now 32... Toshiba Matsushita Display Technologies Corporation announced on the 29th that they have developed a 32" widescreen low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD. Up until now, the world's largest production size for low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCDs has been 17 inches. Thanks to now being able to uniformally place highly efficient TFTs in a spacious area, the display area has been expanded to 32 inches - about 3.2 times traditional size. This is also the world's first production-level use of OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) technology which will bend the liquid crystal molecules to correctly orient them. The seek time has been reduced to under 5ms, and by displaying black in between the times when images are displayed, this setup is said to create a sharp movie image. Mass production will begin in Spring of 2005 in Singapore, and these will be sold to the high-end device market. Also, a 23" amorphous silicon TFT LCD panel using the same OCB technology is planned for the lineup, indicating a positive outlook for the technology.
