You won't get any new features on these, and you lose your in-line remote control and USB cradle, but you'll find that there are new colors.
Also, the price has dropped nearly $100 USD.
Sony will release the "NW-HD2" low-priced Network Walkman with a 20GB hard drive on October 10th. Though it is Open Price, it should cost around 40,000 yen.
This is a low-priced model which omits the remote controller and USB cradle of the "NW-HD1" (actual price: 53,000 yen) released on July 10th. The main body specifications are the same as the NW-HD1. Three colors will be available: silver, blue, and pink.
Also, the included earphones have been changed. They will match the coloring of the unit itself. Also, the LCD backlight color has been changed from the NW-HD1's green to blue. Sony has said that "we would like to appear the goodness of the HDD Walkman to an extensive audience, by using casual colors and reducing the price."
Instead of the USB cradle, an adapter to connect both USB cable and AC adapter has been included. It supports quick charging - 1 hour will give 80% battery life, and 3 hours will give full battery life. Unfortunately, recharging via USB bus power is not supported.
Also, remote controllers of other portable MD/CD players made by Sony will be available for special purchase, and are usable with the NW-HD2.
A magenesium alloy is used as the case's main ingredient. It contains a 1.8" 20GB hard drive, and has external dimensions of 89 x 13.8 x 62.1mm (W x D x H), and a weight of 110g. The hard drive is eqipped with a "G Sensor" to detect heavy acceleration on the hard drive. When said sensor detects that the player is falling, the recording head will "take cover," preventing damage to the hard drive. It is also furnished with the "anti-shock dampener" to soften the impact stress.
Supported audio formats are ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus, and the supported bitrates for ATRAC3plus are 48, 64, and 256kbps - for ATRAC3, 66, 105, and 132kbps. Sony has said that this capacity allows for 13,000 tracks when they are stored in 48kbps ATRAC3plus. The continuous playback time of 48kbps ATRAC3plus is about 30 hours.
The included "SonicStage Ver.2.1" is used for data transfer. In addition to the converting adapter, a USB cable, AC adapter, and carrying pouch are included.
