You'll never see this in America, since Sony has stopped releasing new Clies over here. But who cares, it's not like anyone (in this country) would be willing to drop $900 on a PDA.
Sony will release the "PEG-VZ90" as a high end "Clie" PDA model on September 25th. It features a large type organic EL display. It is listed as Open Price, but the estimated retail price is around 95,000 yen. The OS is Palm OS 5 (Ver5.2.1).
This is a PDA that features a 3.8" color organic EL display with a 480 x 320 dot display. According to Sony, this is the largest product with such a display on the market.
Specifications of the organic EL display include a 1 musecond response time, an all-angle viewing angle of 180 degrees, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. Using Sony's own "Top Emission" system, the screen also reportedly has a larger aperture ratio.
The body is design based on the horizontal screen orientation, and has a slide-type touch panel. To make use of the the horizontal display, the device is focused for the viewing of video and image contents, as well as other AV contents; it features stereo speakers on the left and right sides of the screen. Also, a disc jog is furnished on the operation panel for simple operation of AV contents.
"Media Launcher" AV media playback software is featured, and it supports Clie MP4, QuickTime, MPEG-1, etc. video formats, as well as ATRAC3 and MP3 audio formats.
Also, "Image Convertor 2 for Clie MP4," which is supported by the "Do VAIO" software included on Sony's Vaio series, is included. It can convert to Clie MP4 format while recording in Do VAIO, as well as support conversion from AVI and WMV formats.
Furthermore, while Sony's "CLIE Organizer" PIM software is loaded on the device, it can only be used with a vertical screen display.
So to be able to operate the organic EL for a long time, the battery consists of two 1,300mAh lithium ion polymer batteries. Since both of the batteries are charged at the same time, the device can reportedly charge quickly and with good capacity.
The operating time, when playing back video and screen at maximum brightness, is 4 hours. In reduced brightness mode, it increases to 12 hours. Audio playback mode (with screen off) gives a playback time of 42 hours. Using the device as just a PDA will allow for operation of about 18 days (reduced brightness mode, using schedule, etc. for 30 minutes per day).
The CPU is Sony's 123MHz Handheld Engine. Memory consists of 64MB of RAM (40MB available to user), and 128MB of Flash ROM (95MB available to user). Both Memory Stick (PRO support) and CF slot (Microdrive not supported) are available as memory slots.
Interfaces are USB, IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN, IrDA, and AV remote controller use port.
The main body size is 109 x 23 x 87mm (W x D x H), and it has a weight of 270g. A USB cradle, inner-ear style headphones, and carrying case are included.
