4.85GB DVD-R (not dual layer)

Storage / Nagase

Remember when 650MB CD-R used to be all you can get? Then 700MB CD-R came out, and it basically replaced 650MB CDs. In fact, most CD-Rs I see at stores today are 700MB.

Well, I guess the same thing happened to DVD. Single layer, single sided DVD-Rs hold 4.7GB. You'd think.
But now Nagase comes along and releases these 4.85GB DVD-Rs. They have claimed they're compatible with existing burners/readers, so I guess this is to DVDs as 700MB CD-Rs were to CDs.

Nagase Industries Corporation TRANSTECHNOLOGY will release the single-sided 4x DVD-R media that has a 4.85GB capacity, the "TRANSDISC SUPER PLUS," on September 24th.

The discs have a white inkjet printable label, and will be available in packages of 50, 100, 300, and 1000. The respective direct sale prices will be 6,142 yen (122.84 yen / disc), 11,340 yen (113.4 yen / disc), 32,445 yen (108.15 yen / disc), and 101,850 yen (101.85 yen / disc).

Though traditional single sided DVD-R media had a capacity of 4.7GB, TRANSDISC SUPER PLUS expands the capacity to 4.85GB while maintaining compatibility with traditional discs. Nagase has said the "current recordable DVD drives and DVD writing software can write 4.85GB," and that general use DVD players can read DVD-Video discs with 4.85GB of information written on them.

Furthermore, for home theater based DVD recorders, Toshiba and Pioneer support writing of 4.85GB, while Matsushita's (read: Panasonic's) can only write to 4.7GB. Nagase plans on releasing support information to the public on their site.

While the product has been manufactured overseas, all of the ingredients used in their production have been used by domestic makers, and are manufactured using domestic equipment - Nagase has said that this gives the discs the same quality as those with a domestic production.

Also, the company is offering a guarantee for the recordability and playback of these discs. If one of Nagase's media will not record/play in a drive that records/plays the media of other companies, Nagase will provide a free exchange or full refund.
