Who says you can't have both DVD burner and 160GB HD in under 60mm?

Toshiba Corporation will release the industry's thinnest hybrid recorder, the "RD-XS33," on July 1st. The official price is Open Price, but indicators suggest it should cost around 80,000 yen.

This model uses a new case with a height of a mere 58mm. on the base of the "RD-XS32" released on December of 2003, the HD has been increased from 80GB to the same 160GB of the "RD-XS35." DV input, however, has been dropped.

A DVD multi drive supporting 4x DVD-R is on the unit, but DVD-RAMs can no longer be used while still in the cartridge - they must be removed before usage. Furthermore, recording to DVD-RW can only be done in video mode. Also, the unit is equpped with "MN1.0 mode" which allows the HD to DVD dubbing speed to be done at 32x (previous models were 24x), and the maximum recording time to the HD has been increased from 208 hours of the XS32 to 284 hours.

Moreover, the unit features "Simple Navi" which displays frequently used functions such as recording schedule, title list, and high speed dubbing, on a menu. The design of the remote controller has been changed, and it now has a special button specifically for Simple Navi.

Other functions follow those on the RD-XS32. It has a terrestrial analog tuner (VHF/UHF/CATV), the video DAC is a 54MHz/10bit, and the audio DAC is a 192KHz/24bit. It can play videoat 1.5x. Although it does not feature the "Net de Navi" as on upper level models, it does support high speed dubbing of other titles while recording, as well as original recording during high speed dubbing. It can also dub DVD-R/RW discs recorded in video mode to the HD, provided the discs have been recorded with a supported unit.

The inputs are S-Video x 3, Composite x 3, Analog 2ch audio x 3. The outputs are D2 x 1, S-Video x 2, Composite x 2, Analog 2ch audio x 2, Optical Digital Audio x 1. The external dimensions are 430 x 336 x 58mm (W x D x H), and the weight is 4.7kg.

Asahi Beer Corporation is running the "Isn't Pure Draft fun! Campaign" beginning on June 6th in which one can win originally colored models of the RD-XS33. one enters the contest by pasting 36 seals, each found on cans of "Asahi Pure Draft," "Asahi Pure Draft Aqua Blue," and "Asahi Pure Draft Off-Time" and sending them in. Blue, red, and green models will be awarded to 5,000 winners.
