Please note that this report is based on Japan.
It's still an interesting statistic, because if you ask me, the American cellular phone market is only following the trends of the Japanese market...though we're a couple years behind. Anyhow, this demonstrates youth's increasing reliance on technology. Whether or not this is bad, though, is up to you to decide.

96.3% of college students have a PHS/cellular phone, and 86.6% of high school students are in the same boat. According to results of a new study, more than 70% of students in this group responded that they "feel uneasy without a cellular phone."

The study was conducted in November of last year, and included 2353 people in the Kanto and Kansai areas, who were divided into five groups - middle school, high school, college students, workers in their 20s, and workers in their 30s.

When looking at the monthly costs associated with cellular phones, college students paid 7704 yen [1], high school students 7398 yen [2], and workers in their 20s paid 6756 yen [3].

Those who answered that they would feel uneasy without a cellular phone was at its highest in high school students with 70.7%. College students ranked in at 68.1%, and workers in their 30s at 65.1%

The report issuing agency has said "More than workers who use them for their jobs, it seems that for high school and college students, cellular phones have become indispensable tools for human relations."
