NEC announced their new LSI today, which is the industry's first to support all functions of video/audio processing involved in DVD recording.
NEC Electronics Corporation announced on the 22nd that they have begun sale of the DVD-recording backend processing LSI, the "μPD61181." The sample price is 10,000 yen. They will begin mass production in October, and hope to produce 500,000 units monthly by April 2005.
The μPD61181 is a system LSI that integrates all functions, from video/audio compression & decompression, still/moving image output, and operation functions. What previously took 8 seperate chips is now integrated into one backend processor, and it uses external DDR-SDRAM (DDR333), so that the memory access is one connection.
