This isn't for TV, but for radio. But hey, it still supports character broadcast, still images, and even simple movies.
Pixela Corporation announced on the 15th that they have begun offering an assesment model to broadcast industry persons of their terrestrial digital radio tuner that supports 3 segment reception.
The assessment model is a PC card type tuner card as announced in September 2003. The 3 segment reception supporting OFDM demodulation LSI and card bus controller have been integrated into one chip, and it uses a Matsushita-make tuner unit.
When connected a PC, one can use the tuner card to listen to digital radio on their PC speakers. The exclusive BML browser software is installed on the PC, and the station is chosen. The card supports character information, still images, and simple moving images. The supported operating system is Windows XP.
The card is being offered to broadcast workers in organizations such as NHK, FM Tokyo, and the Digital Radio Promotion Association (DRP) as development equipment. Its intended use will be for testing the reception of terrestrial digital radio broadcasts, and display of BML format character information, still images, and simple moving images.
Also, to go with implementation test broadcasts currently being conducted in Tokyo and Osaka, EPG data broadcasts are to being sometime before the end of March - this card supports the display of such information.
Since the specifications for copy guarding have not been finalized, this card does not feature the capability to record sound/images. However, it is expected to have these capabilities once it is turned into an actual product. The external dimensions of the card are 54 x 115 x 11mm (W x D x H), and it weighs 38g. The power consumption is about 1.5W.
The current roadmap for the company consists of "beginning shipment of samples in the first quarter of 2004, and have merchandise versions by July or August of 2004," but "development is continuing as planned. We hope to release a general product by Summer of Fall."
