The digital video camera will record to 8cm DVD-RAM/R discs, and can even record in widescreen for you amateur film makers.

Matsushita Electric Industries Corporation will release the 8cm DVD-RAM/R recording digital video camera, the "VDR-M70K" on April 10th. The official price is Open Price, but indicators suggest it will cost around 120,000 yen.

Just like the previous model, this camera is a "DVD Digicam" developed in cooperation with Hitachi. The specifications are nearly the same as the "DZ-MV580" announced by Hitachi in February; however, the Matsushita model does not feature "Simple Mode" that will change the menu to only simple settings with 1 switch, and has a different design. Also, a two-sided 8cm DVD-RAM disc is included, while the MV580 includes only a one-sided DVD-RAM disc.

The camera uses a 1/3.8 type 1.02MP CCD, with 400,000 effective pixels for video recording, and 960,000 effective pixels for still image recording. Using the margins on the CCD image area, it is also possible to record in 16:9 widescreen mode. The lens is capable of 10x optical zoom (F1.8 - 2.4), and has anti-hand movement features.

When using DVD-RAM for recording video, the disc is in the DVD-VR standard. When using DVD-R, it is in the DVD video standard. For still images, DVD-RAM discs use XTRA, FINE, and STD modes, while using DVD-R discs use FINE, LPCM, and STD modes. Also, JPEG images can be written to DVD-RAM or a SD memory card.

Another feature is when using DVD-RAM discs, scenes can be deleted, moved, have special effects applied, divided, combined, etc. right on the camera itself. It also includes "Disc Navigation" which displays thumbnails of all the scenes in order of date of recording.

The finder is a 110,000 pixel finder, and a 2.5" LCD display. It uses USB 2.0 to connect to the PC. A PC editing kit, including USB cable, drivers, and editing software is included.

When using the included "VW-VBD140 (1,360mAh)" battery with the finder, it will operate for about 2 hours and 10 minutes (XTRA/FINE) - when using the LCD monitor, 1 hour and 50 minutes (XTRA/FINE). The external dimensions are 64 x 146 x 89mm (W x D x H) and the camera weighs 585g (when recording).
