NHC's new device in the "Magic Talkers" line is a portable media player for those who want to try their luck at English conversation. Readers of this article however may be more interested in the device's other functions, such as playback of DivX and XviD files.

For 44,800 yen on September 4th, you can pick up the "LM-500J" from NHC Corporation. It's created for those who want to improve their English conversation, including video playback, English conversation audio, and an electronic dictionary.
There's a 3.5" touchpanel screen with a resolution of 320 x 240, and there's also a keyboard. The SD card slot can handle cards as large as 2GB, and there's 256MB of internal memory.
Playable formats include DivX, XviD, and MPEG-4+IMA for video, and the files can be as large as 640 x 480 dots at 30 frames per second. SMI format subtitles are also supported. There's an AV output jack for those that want to display their videos on TV. For audio files, you'll see support of MP3 and WMA. Music can be played while browsing through the dictionary -- other features include 5 equalizer presets, custom EQ, and a 13-line lyrics display. The LM-500J is also equipped with an FM radio and voice recorder, as well as three different games.
A lithium polymer battery provides about 4 hours and 30 minutes of video playback. The unit can connect to a PC via USB 2.0.
