The two main technologies shown were a "reversible LCD" screen and internet antennas for planes.
Mitsubishi Electronics held an event on the 17th at which their R&D department displayed a total of 17 new advancements. The five main themes of this event were "Environment/Energy," "Video/Display," "Human Interface," "Transmission/Device," and "Security."
The technology receiving the most technology at the event was the "reversible LCD" technology which allows for one LCD panel to display an image on both sides. The technology is actually two backlights and one panel - when one backlight shines, the image is viewable on the other side. When both backlights are shone, the image is viewable from both sides, which actually creates a reflected image on the opposite side of the screen. To combat this, the image is swapped out 120 times every second, making it look like there are two different images being displayed on each screen.
This technology will particularly be useful for the realm of cellular phones, and will allow for large screens on both sides of the devices, which when compared to having one main LCD on the inside and one smaller LCD on the outside, is lighter and takes up less space.
Another technology exhibited was the an antenna developed by Mitsubishi Electronics for use with Boeing's "Connexion by Boeing" network connection service to be offered inside of planes. This ties a plane in with a ground office via satellite, making it possible to connect to a network from a plane. one of the difficulties in developing the antenna was the high amount of electrical interference at high altitudes. At the experimental stage, a downstream of 20Mbps and upstream of 1Mbps were achieved, and service is to begin this month on Atlantic routes.
Other developments displayed at the exhibition were technology which would automatically detect the best facial image in a series of frames, and technology which could single out specific movements and characters in movies.
