Here's a rather interesting new portable media player from NEC, of all companies. It's based on a perfume.
NEC will release the "VoToL" HDD media player, which uses a bottle of perfume motif, in late March via their website. Its price is 39,900 yen.
It interfaces with a PC via USB 2.0, and connects via the included cable or a cradle, sold separately. The supported operating system is Windows XP.
It is the company's first media player, with an emphasis on design. It uses the image of "stuffing a various audio and video into a bottle," and it was developed as a "portable luxury item for both male and female adults." The body uses the motif of a bottle of perfume, with the part that represents the "cap" as the jog dial.
The unit uses a GUI that will switch to different functionality as the jog dial is turned. When changing, the playback position is recorded, and when users return to the function, playback is resumed from that position. This makes it easy for users to switch to different functions without having to look at the screen, which is often a problem in crowded areas such as trains.
Also, as a unique feature, the unit contains a function called "Transpeech" recognizes spoken English and Japanese sentences, and allows for translation to and from English and Japanese.
Main specifications include a 30GB hard drive, 2.7" color LCD with 320 x 240 dots, and an SD card slot. Supported video formats are MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV9 (DRM10 support), and for audio, MP3, WMA (DRM10 support), WAV, Ogg, AAC, and for still images, JPEG, GIF, and BMP. Also available is a photo storage function that can transfer still images from an SD card to the hard drive (and the other way around), as well as a TXT file reader.
The battery is a lithium ion, and allows for 4 hours of continuous video playback, or 8 hours of continuous audio playback. The body measures 61 x 18 ~ 22 x 123mm (W x D x H), and weighs 188g. An AC adapter, application CD, headphones, and so forth are included.
