A new vertically operating shelf unit from onkyo can handle CDs, MDs, and can connect with onkyo's "DS-A1" iPod adapter.

Onkyo Corporation will release the "X-T1" on February 17th, a CD/MD component system that uses a new design with the main unit and speakers diagonally pointing up. It is listen as Open Price, but estimates dictate it should be around 42,800 yen.

It is a minicomponent system that features a CD/MD player, 7.5W x 2ch amp, and FM/AM tuner. Primary buttons such as play/pause and volume adjustment are position in a circle.

The CD portion supports the playback of CD-R/RW. However, the supported format is PCM only; it does not support MP3 or WMA. The MD portion supports MDLP, and ripping from CD to MD happens at 4x. It is also equipped with the "DLA Link" function that will automatically adjust the peaks of digital audio recording levels when dubbing from multiple CDs.

The main unit also features as Tone Control function that can adjust the low/high sounds to 10 different levels. The "S.BASS" function also strengthens the low tones. The amplifier has a frequency response from 20Hz to 50kHz/±3dB. The signal to noise ratio is 80dB.

It has 2 way bass reflex speakers, the woofer uses an 8cm A-OMF cone, and the tweeters use 2cm balanced domes. With the "AERO ACOUSTIC DRIVE" that employs slit-style bass reflex ducts, the lower tones are said to be more voluminous. The cabinets have a round form shape that eliminate parallel surfaces, which helps reduce reverb. The frequency response is from 70Hz to 50kHz.

Also provided is an R1 port for connection to other products offered by onkyo for system linkage, so the unit can connect with the "DS-A1" iPod adapter. This allows for operation of the iPod with the X-T1's remote control, and recharging the iPod.

One analog audio input is provided, as are two analog audio outputs and a subwoofer preout. It also has a headphone jack. The external dimensions of the amp are 298 x 222 x 203mm (W x D x H), and it weighs about 3.7kg. The speakers (1 unit) are 125 x 206 x 221mm (same), and weighs 0.9kg. A remote control is included.
