A slew of companies in Japan are getting together, apparently to decide on the integration of home electronics such as TVs or whatnot with realtime internet connectivity.
14 companies from the home electronics and communication sectors got together for a foundation conference of the "Ubiquitous Open Platform Forum" on the 10th in Tokyo. The participating companies will cooperate and aim at establishing a basis of common grounds in areas such as information appliances, internet environment, creation, settlement, and connectivity. As soon as this fall products using the new standards could be introduced to the market.
Participating enterprises are: NTT Communications Corporation, KDDI Corporation, Sanyo Electronics Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, Sony Communications Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Nifty Corporation, Nippon Electric Corporation (NEC), Pioneer Corporation, Hitachi Manufacturing Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industries Corporation, Matsushita Electric Works Corporation, Mitsubishi Electronic Corporation. The Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications will act as an observer. The chairman is NTT Communications' Tomida Shuuji.
The objective of the forum is to settle on technical specifications for the implementation of flat televisions, digital recorders, and other home electronics, and establish online realtime connectivity with these devices. As another action, each ISP and maker will verify connectivity with their products, have the resource of applications and content producers, diffusion outside of Japan, joint trials, application of IPv6, and investigation into markets and techniques.
While technical specifications have not been solidified yet, for example when starting internet connection services for a TV, they are looking to be able to control recording from a cellular phone, as well as home security cameras and such. Particularly they want to eradicate the PC-like installation and settings, and are emphasizing "relief, safe, easy."
Director Hori Hirokazu (President of Dream Incubator Corporation) said during the opening of the event, "Japan's home electronics are at the world's top level. But the price is high, and if this situation continues, we will fall behind Korea, China, etc.. So, the compatibility of information appliances has been increased, and broadband is still diffusing. But there is still a distance between maker and carrier. We would like to continue with these two spheres combined."
