If you don't think LCDs are thin enough already, you'll be pleased to know Toshiba Matsushita Display Technologies has introduced an 11.1 inch display that's a mere 2.75mm (0.10 inches) thick. Let's hope it has a titanium backing, since those dimensions just scream brittle. Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology announced on the 17th that they have developed an 11.1 inch widescreen low-temp polysilicon TFT LCD for use with notebook computers that has a thickness of 2.75mm, which is half that of current offerings. Mass production has already begun. The screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9 with its 1366 x 768 pixel display. Not only has the screen's thickness been reduced to 2.55mm at its thinnest portion, but the weight has been reduced by 35% -- the new unit is 146 grams. The screen combines glass polishing technology with an LED backlight and implements a flat construction that arranges the driving circuitry on the same surface as the display's glass. So while retaining the same optical efficiency as current CRT backlight products, it is lightweight and thin. It is planned to be on display at "FPD International 2005," scheduled to take place from October 19th to 21st at Pacifico Yokohama.
