We've addressed the LinkTheater a few times in the past [1], and here comes a newer, smaller version. This one drops the DVD drive.

Buffalo Corporation has announced the "PC-P1LAN," a compact model of their "LinkTheater" network media player, and will release in in late October. It costs 11,130 yen.

This model drops the DVD player portion of the network media player, and it has dimensions of 220 x 124 x 47mm (W x D x H), and it weighs around 0.6kg. Besides MPEG-2 (up to 8Mbps), it supports the playback of MP3/LPCM audio, and JPEG, BMP, and PNG images.

WMV9, AVI, and other files will be converted into MPEG-2 in realtime on the PC, and displayed on the TV to which the PC-P1LAN is connected. This realtime conversion processor requires a Pentium 4 1.4GHz or above processor, and 256MB of memory of above.

The LinkTheater mini can also be connected to Buffalo's own LAN hard drive, the "LinkStation (HS-DGL series)," and other components that are compatible with DLNA guidelines; the unit can thus play video and audio files from DLNA-supporting components. Client support for "Link de Roku!!," Buffalo's own network video recording solution for recording TV without a PC, is also planned for February of 2006.

Composite and analog audio output jacks are provided. It also features a 100BASE-TX/10BASE-T Ethernet jack. A remote control is included.
