It looks like more and more digital camera makers are moving towards DivX for their video recording features. Pentax is the latest, with the "Optio S6" that can record in the DivX format.
Pentax Corporation will release the "Optio S6" compact digital camera on November 2nd that can record video in the DivX format. It is Open Price, and the estimated retail cost is around 40,000 yen. Two colors will be available: Silver and Wine Red.
The S6 is the successor to the Optio S5z. It features a 1/2.5" 6MP primary color CCD. Its biggest feature is its ability to record video in the DivX (5.2.1) format. The file extension is AVI, and video can be recorded with audio at up to 30 frames per second. Video stabilization features can also be used. The company is currently in the proper of obtaining a DivX license.
Videos can be recorded at 640 x 480 or 320 x 240, where each resolution gives you "S.Fine," "Fine," and "Economy" options for image quality. The frame rate of either is 30 frames per second.
The camera has 23MB of internal memory, and a SD card slot. Using a 1GB card, you'll be able to fit around 134 minutes of video at 320 x 240. The bitrate of S.Fine at 640 x 480 is 3.3Mbps, Fine at 2.7Mbps, and Economy at 2.3Mbps.
It also uses a "Sliding Lens System," where the middle lenses are removed from the optical axis, and stored in mirrored tube. The lens unit has been extensively rethought, such as using two non-spherical double concave lenses, enabling it to be smaller. Using a thin CCD, and a fully flat back unit, the unit itself is 2mm thinner versus previous models.
The focal point, under 35mm conversion, is from about 37.5mm to 112.5mm, and it features a 3x zoon, giving the camera an F value of F2.7 to F5.2. It uses two 6-layer, non-spherical lenses. It also has a 4x digital zoom. The normal recording distance is at its shortest, 0.4m.
The dimensions of the body are 53.5 x 83.5 x 19mm (H x W x T). It weighs about 100g on its own, and inserting a battery and SD card brings the weight to 120g. The LCD monitor is a 2.5" one with 232,000 pixels. It has no optical viewfinder.
Still images can be recorded in 7 sizes, ranging from 640 x 480 to 2816 x 2112 dots. Sensitivity can be chosen at either 64, 100, 200, or 400, and when choosing the "Candle Light Mode," ISO800 is also possible with pixel mixture as on the Optio WPi.
An auto-compliance feature provides autofocus functionality. Connection with a PC is done via USB, and the camera uses a lithium ion battery (D-LI8). When charged for about 100 minutes, the camera can take around 130 pictures.
