Sony has announced the successor to the DSC-M1, the DSC-M2. It's 5.1MP and has a load of movie-related features. More details inside.
Sony will release the "Cybershot DSC-M2" compact digital camera on October 21st. It is Open Price, but estimates dictate it will cost around 50,000 yen.
This unit is the successor to the "Cybershot DSC-M1" released in November of 2004. Like its predecessor, the M2 retains the same mobile phone-like appearance, and keeps up the "hybrid" position by still offering dedicated "PHOTO" and "MOVIE" buttons for capturing images/movies, respectively. The DSC-M2 features a design made to appeal to women, and will not only be available in three color variations (white, pink, and silver), but offers enhanced controls through additions such as the "Shuttle Key" for quickly scrolling through images.
A new function offered by the unit is called "Pocket Album," which will automatically save still images at 640 x 480 and video at 320 x 240 (1fps or 2fps) to the unit's internal memory This is done separately from the original images/videos that are recorded. With this feature, pictures that a user takes can be carried with them all the time, and easily displayed as a calendar or browsed through. Up to 1,100 images can be saved in the Pocket Album, and because of this, the camera's internal memory can only be used for Pocket Album.
Additionally, the unit features a slideshow option accompanied by background music. Four BGM songs are included inside the unit, and can be played when viewing a image/video slideshow. These BGM songs can also be replaced by the user.
The imaging unit is a 1/2.5" Super HAD CCD with an effective resolution of 5.1MP and primary color filter. Its sensitivity is ISO 64, 100, 200, or 400. The unit features Sony's own "Real Imaging Processor." It has a startup time of 1.5 seconds, shutter lag of 0.27 seconds, release lag of 0.01 seconds, and photograph interval of 1.1 second.
Available still image resolutions are 2592 x 1944, 2592 x 1728, 2048 x 1536, 1280 x 960, and 640 x 480. The recording format is JPEG, and up to 4 consecutive images can be recorded in Rapid mode.
Videos can be recorded at 640 x 480/30fps, 320 x 240/30fps, or 320 x 240/15fps. They have audio, and their recording format is MPEG-4.
The Lens is a Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar has an 8 x 11 construction that feautres three unspherical lenses and one prism, and features a 3x optical zoom by being convex. The 35mm conversion lens has a focal distance of 38 ~ 114mm, and it has an open F value of F3.5 ~ 4.4. The photographing distance is from 50cm to infinity, when in macro mode (wide angle) 8cm to infinity, distant mode 25cm to infinity. A magnification mode is also available when using the Wide Angle Macro, with a recording distance of 1cm to 20cm.
The battery is a lithium ion rechargable. Under CIPA standards, it can record about 210 still images or video for 105 minutes. It does not feature an optical viewfinder. The recording medium is Memory Stick Duo (PRO supported). Connection with a PC is done via USB, and the unit connects with a cradle called the "Cybershots Station" that features the USB connection and video output. The camera also features an internal flash and autofocus assistance light.
Not including protuberances, the external dimensions are 51.2 x 32.4 x 123.1mm (W x D x H). The weight including the rechargable battery, Memory Stick Duo, and wrist strap is 210g.
