What difference does a 5.6MHz/1-bit amplifier make to audio quality? I have absolutely no idea, but it sure sounds fancy, doesn't it? That's the premise behind Sharp's new "Auvi SD-MX1" DVD/CD/MD component system.

Sharp Corporation will release the "Auvi SD-MX1" DVD/CD/MD component system that features a 5.6MHz 1-bit digital amplifier, on August 26th. It is Open Price, but estimates suggest it should cost around 65,000 yen.

The component system consists of a main unit that contains DVD/CD, MD, and an FM/AM tuner, as well as 2ch front speakers, and finally a subwoofer with a 2.1ch 1-bit amplifier. The amplifier uses a 1-bit digital amp that operates at a frequency of 5.6MHz, with a maximum output of 25W x 2ch for the front speakers, and 50W for the subwoofer.

Also, the unit features the Dolby Virtual Speaker function, allowing virtual surround playback using 2.1ch. Dolby Digital, Pro Logic II, and AAC decoding is also available.

With a D2 port, the unit supports progressive output of DVD-Video. Besides supporting the playback of DVD-R/RW (Video/VR Mode) and Audio CDs, the unit supports the playback of MP3/WMA/JPEG files stored on a CD-R/RW. The MD portion supports MDLP, as well as group editing. It has a 4x dubbing speed from CD to MD.

An analog and an optical digital jack provide audio input. Available video output ports include Composite, S-Video, and D2. Audio output can be either coaxial digital or earphone. The main unit has external dimensions of 431 x 100 x 192mm (W x D x H, including stand), and it supports both horizontal and vertical placements. It weighs roughly 2.3kg. It also includes a remote control that can control basic the basic functions of those televisions by most major manufacturers.

The front speakers are 2-way style, with an 8cm woofer and 4cm tweeter. The dimensions including the stands are 105 x 105 x 205mm (W x D x H), and they weigh about 1kg each.

The subwoofer that contains the 1-bit digital amplifier is bass-reflect style, and it has a 16cm unit. Its dimensions are 200 x 443 x 380,, (W x D x H), and it weighs about 11.3kg.
