We heard about their MG40 and MG50 a few months back, but JVC also recently introduced their "MG70." It features an integrated 30GB hard drive, and takes the 1.33MP sensor of the MG50 and kicks it up to 2MP.
JVC will introduce a new model in their "Everio" series of video cameras with integrated hard drive. The "GZ-MG70" will be released some time in early September. Its estimated retail price is around 150,000 yen.
The previous models in the Everio series incorporated 1" Microdrive hard drives in a CF Type 2 slot. The GZ-MG series, however, features an internal 1.8" hard drive...this allows for a far larger capacity, of 30GB in the MG70. Victor commented by saying that it "is a next generation video camera that needs to exchange of media." Also, the design of the camera as been change to be more horizontal, like a DV camera or DVD camera. The CCD of the camera is different from the 3-stage approach of the MC200; it is now a single-stage.
Like the MC series, the MG series features the "Megabrid" high image quality engine. The camera also features some durability items, such as the "Floating Dampener" with gel-like cushioning around the hard drive itself to reduce shocks and vibrations, as well as the "3D acceleration sensor" to detect when the camera has been dropped and immediately force a power-off.
The GZ-MG70 features a 1/3.6 type CCD with an effective resolution of 2MP, a 10x optical zoom lens, and 30GB hard drive. It can record still images in 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, 1024 x 768, and 640 x 480 sizes.
The focal distance of the 35mm conversion, when taking still images, is 38.9 to 389mm -- when taking movies, 47.8 to 487mm. The open F value is 1.8 to 2.2. It also features a 2.5 inch LCD monitor with 112,000 pixels.
Video is record in MPEG-2, and audio in Dolby Digital. When using the 720 x 480 pixel "Ultra Fine Mode," the camera can record about 7 hours and 10 minutes of video. Using the included "BN-VF707" battery pack, the recording time when using the LCD is about 50 minutes.
The unit also features a SD memory card slot. Still image data can be moved or copied from the internal hard drive. The camera also has a USB 2.0 interface, and supports PictBridge. At the bottom right of the lens is a flash.
The size is 71 x 109 x 70mm (W x D x H), and it weighs (just the camera itself) 390g, but when it is recording about 450g. It can also use the "GL-V0730" 0.7x wide conversion lens for the GZ-MC200/100, and the 1.4x teleconversion lens, the "GL-V1430."
