Thanko introduces their third version of the Butterfly MP3 playing headphones. We've covered version 1 [1] and version 2 [2], and they left quite a bit to be desired in design department. The company must have realized that, as the third version is something I'd actually consider wearing. The 1GB model is only 13,980 yen, making these quite a bargain. If I had to find something to complain about, I'd say it is how MP3 files with bitrates greater than 192kbps aren't supported.
Thanko Corporation will release the "ButterFly3 MP3 Player," headphone-shaped MP3 player on third "Rare Mono Shop" from today. 512MB and 1GB models are available, where the 512MB model is 9,980 yen and the 1GB version 13,980 yen.
The ButterFly3 is a headphone-shaped MP3 player containing either 512MB or 1GB of flash memory. Audio can be enjoyed by simply putting the headphones on. This is the third version of the "ButterFly MP3 Player" from 2004, where this version features a "soft" arm between the earphones.
Thanko said, "there may be some times when they'll come off if you're playing extreme sports or something, but they can be used without problems even when wearing glasses."
Besides memory capacities, the models are the same. They support the USB Mass Storage class, and MP3 files are transferred to them from the PC using USB 2.0. Supported operating systems are Windows 98, SE, Me, 2000, and XP.
Supported audio playback formats are MP3, WMA, WAV, ASF, and WMV, where the bitrates supported for MP3 are from 32 ~ 192kbps. The maximum audio output level is 55mW, and the headphones have an output of 5mW. The signal to noise ratio is 86dB.
The lithium ion battery takes about 3 hours to recharge, and can power the unit for roughly 11.5 hours. Charging is done via USB. The headphones have a diameter of 50mm, and the soft arm is 500mm long. They weigh 46.5g, and a USB cable is included.
