Elecom has a new notebook lock coming out that isn't one of those junky ones that just sticks in the side of the notebook. It actually prevents people from opening the notebook. Well, it's supposed to prevent them from doing so...I guess it wouldn't stand up to a crowbar for too long.

Elecom Corporation released the "ESL-21D" notebook PC wire lock. Its price is 7,350 yen. Also, for volume purchasers, the "ESL-21DS" with common lock and key will be available for 7,560 yen and the "ESL-21DM" with master key and varying locks will be available for 8,085 yen.

This product is a die-cast lock at the end of a 4mm diameter wire that is 1.7mm long. The wire is attached to the underside of the desk, then the lock will lock the PC in its closed position. This is to protect the PC from theft while nobody is in the office and prevent unauthorized access to the PC. Because the lock's arm can turn 180 degrees, the PC can still be used while still attached to the lock.

The piece that is inserted to the notebook PC uses a space with a rubber pad. Five different types of spacer are available, to match the thickness of the notebook. Supported notebooks are to have a security slot with a width of 7 ~ 8 mm, depth of under 4.5mm, and thickness of 3 ~ 4mm, and the notebook itself should be 45 ~ 60mm thick.

The lock itself is a cylinder lock type. The key is a dimple key making the lock more difficult to pick.

The lock size is 21 x 82 x 70mm (W x D x H), and it weighs about 340g.

Two keys are included, as are 5 spacers and square/round pads to adjust the space between the lock and the PC.
