They will add a few of the features, namely mp3 support, that were mysteriously taken out of the device immediately before launch.
More details inside.
Sony presented on the 26th that they will offer upgrades free of charge to the hybrid recorder "PSX" at the beginning of February.
Updates will be done via a network connection to the unit, or a CD-ROM that will be distributed free of charge. They will announce more details about the update method on February 5th; and CD-ROM sending/receiving information, and shipment will begin in the latter part of February.
Also, beginning at 9AM on February 5th, the "PSX Upgrade Exclusive Desk" will begin operation, for CD-ROM shipment via phone, and other questions.

Back in November, Sony officially presented that there were a few issues regarding compatibility with the PSX - and had to reduce the DVD-R dubbing speed from 24x to 12x, and a few other things. This update addresses a few of those issues, in addition to adding some new functions, ironing out bugs, etc..
The definite updates are:
-Dubbing from HD to DVD is now a maximum 24x
-TIFF image support
-MP3 audio support
-re-extend settings during extended recording
-Flash function (instant FF/RW to 15 second intervals from current time during playback)
-Video title sort function
-Title input via USB keyboard
-other fixes, such as dubbing to other units..
These updates are planned for March:
-DVD+RW recording support
-Support for GIF still images
-Rec/Playback of Cybershot format movies
-"Playstation BB" support
