From Toshiba comes the "dynabook SS SX," a machine that is a tiny 9.9mm at its thinnest point. These things are getting awfully thin...
Toshiba Corporation will release two models of the "dynabook SS SX," a B5-sized single spindle notebook PC with a new case design in late April. The included OS of both machines is Windows XP Professional (SP2).
Both are listed as Open Price, and the "dynabook SS SX/190NR" which includes Office Personal edition 2003 should be about 250,000 yen; the "dynabook SS SX/190NK" without this software should be around 230,000 yen.
The new models use a new case design with a design revolving around the silver body color, and have a thickness of about 9.9mm at their thickest point. With the use of a "Low Loss Substrate" for micro-wiring and a "Stackbia Construction" for allowing for additional components and components on both sides, the substrate of the new unit is roughly 72% smaller than that of the "dynabook SS S9." Because of this, the battery life is about twice that of the S9, while stilling being much thinner.
Also strengthened were the security features of the notebook, such as a TMP security chip that will encrypt the hard drive contents, make the hard drive unrecognizable by other computers even if removed from the notebook, and utilization of the EFS (File Encryption) functionality of Windows XP Professional.
Other features include "HDD Protection" that will protect the hard drive from damage from falls with a 3D motion sensor and shock absorption, as well as fingerprint recognition.
The specs of both models are the same, with a lower power consumption Pentium M 753 (1.2GHz) processor, 256MB of PC2-3200 DDR2 SDRAM, Intel 915GMS chipset (onboard video), and 60GB hard drive. The notebook also furnishes a 12.1 XGA LCD (1024 x 768) and Office oneNote 2003 (SP1).
Available interfaces are Type2 PC Card slot x 1, SD card slot, USB 2.0 x 2, Gigabit Ethernet, IEEE 802.11b/g, Bluetooth (Ver 2.0) and mini D-Sub 15 pin.
The battery is lithium ion, and it will power the unit for roughly 5.4 hours. The body size is 286 x 229 x 9.9 ~ 19.8mm (W x D x H), and it weighs about 1.29kg.
