Fujitsu is gearing up to release one of the most powerful A/V desktop PCs ever released -- the TX90L/D is the first desktop to support the direct recording of terrestrial digital broadcasts, including 1080i HDTV broadcasts. I might also mention it has a 32" widescreen LCD.

Fujitsu Corporation will release a desktop PC on April 29th which features a 32" widescreen LCD and an integrated terrestrial digital/BS/110 CS digital tuner.

The upper level models of the "FMV-DESKPOWER TX series" with an integrated 32" widescreen display and "FMV-DESKPOWER LX series" with integrated 20" widescreen display both support digital broadcasts. Both are Open Price, but the upper level "TX90L/D" of the TX series should cost 400,000 yen, and the upper level "LX90L/D" should cost around 290,000 yen. Both use Windows XP Home Edition for an OS.

The unique characteristic of this desktop PC is its TV-like functionality with its integrated 32" widescreen LCD and inclusion of a digital tuner. Digital broadcast support is limited to the upper level "FMV-DESKPOWER TX90L/D" model with a Pentium 4 530J (3GHz) and 500GB hard drive. The lower level model in this series, the "FMV-DESKPOWER TX70L," omits the digital tuner and takes a CPU and hard drive capacity hit for a price of about 340,000 yen.

The display is a 32" Sharp-made panel with a resolution of 1360 x 768 dots. Its standout characteristic is the support for recording/playback of Full HD (1080i) digital broadcasts.

While previous PCs with digital broadcast support and individual capture cards could only playback and record broadcasts by down-converting them to SD resolutions, the "DESKPOWER TX" is able to play and record full digital Full HD resolution broadcasts with use of the independently developed "Dixel Engine" LSI. However, because the display panel has a resolution of 1360 x 768, and since the PC itself does not feature a video output, it cannot actually display Full HD.

After the video signal of the digital broadcasts is composed, it will be encrypted and composed inside of the Dixel Engine LSI, at which point the encrypted data will be recorded to the hard drive. When the video needs to be played, it will once again be run past the Dixel Engine to be output to the LCD. Data that travels across the PCI bus is encrypted, so that even data decoded by the PC's memory such as MPEG data will undergo decoding by the Dixel Engine.

It is because of this that the unit complies with ARIB (???) standards for content protection. Playback of recorded digital broadcast data is only possible on the DESKPOWER TX.

Apart from a digital tuner, the unit features two connectors for terrestrial analog tuners. Simultaneous recording can be done from both analog tuners and the digital tuner. With the "Instant MyMedia" function, the unit can go from "off" to "started" in about 5 seconds for analog broadcasts, contributing to convienient playback/recording.

High quality recording is possible with the inclusion of GRT, a 3D Y/C filter, noise reduction, and a 10bit A/D converter. Furthermore, the unit also has the Dixel Filter with sharpness, edge stress and deblocking functions.

Specifications besides the CPU and hard drive are the same, such as the 512MB memory (max 1GB), Intel 915GV chipset (video onboard), and DVD+R DL support DVD Super Multi Drive. Available interfaces are Type2 PC Card Slot x 2, SD card/Memory Stick/xD Picture Card slot x 1, Ethernet, USB 2.0 x 6, IEEE 1394 x 1 (4-pin), D4 input x1, S-Video input x 1, Composite input x 1, and optical digital output.

The body size is 944 x 290 x 644mm (W x D x H), and it weighs about 41kg.

Also available is the "LX90L/D," an upper level model of the "DESKPOWER LX" that supports digital broadcasts with a 20" LCD. It is Open Price, but estimates indicate it should cost around 290,000 yen. It uses Windows XP Home Edition.

This is a desktop PC with integrated 20" LCD with a 1360 x 768 resolution. It features the same digital broadcast-related recording/playback functionality of the "TX90L/D," such as the Dixel Engine and Terrestrial/BS/110 CS digital tuner.

It contains 512MB of memory (max 1GB), the Intel 915GV chipset (onboard video), and a DVD Super Multi drive. It measures 622 x 270 x 430mm (W x D x H), and weighs about 18kg.
