Sony has integrated the circuitry with o­ne of their smaller screens to be part of the screen itself. This is a bit complicated to explain, so it's better that you just take a gander at the image.

Sony has developed "System o­n Glass" technology aimed at mobile phones, which integrates surrounding circuitry with the LCD screen itself. They will begin taking orders in January.

There are two models - the QVGA (240x320) 2.3" display "ACX522" and the SlimQVGA(208x320) 2.9" "ACX525." Sample prices for the ACX522 is 12,000 yen and the ACX525 18,000 yen.

The driver and input output circuitry, as well as power circuitry have been integrated into o­ne to have o­ne source of power, o­n top of a low-temperature poly-silicon TFT LCD substrate. This decreases the number of parts needed as well as production costs, making it credible as it also reduces both weight and size of devices.

The integrated circuitry panel developed by Sharp Corporation called the "System LCD" has been in mass production since 2002 and is actually used in cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, etc..
