Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (also known as Verbatim) has announced what is apparently the world's first 8.5GB single-sided dual-layer data DVD-R media. The new discs will go on sale from this spring.
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media has announced that it will begin sales of 8.5GB single-sided dual-layer data DVD-R media (DHR85Y1) from this spring. It will have no set retail price but the estimated street price is approximately 1500 yen. The product announcement is the world's first for dual-layer DVD-R media.
Up to 8.5GB of data can be recorded on the DVD-R media using a Dual-Layer compatible DVD-R drive. Recording speeds between 2x and 4x are supported. The discs conform to existing standards for playback in DVD video players and PC DVD-ROM drives.
To manufacture single-sided dual-layer discs, technology to apply pigment to each recording layer and insert a spacer between them is necessary. Mitsubishi Kagaku developed an organic pigment based on their proprietary "DYN-AZO" pigment to achieve a single-sided dual-layer recording film. In addition, the disc uses warp control technology and Mitsubishi Kagaku's precision disc pressing technology for high-speed recording media to achieve "excellent performance and stability during playback and recording."
Although dual-layer DVD-R media are not yet recognised by the DVD Forum, "the standard is in the final stages of preparation and drives that support it are already available. The standard should be approved before the media goes on sale."
