Corega is probably most well-known for their networking gear. However, it looks like they've been feeling a bit left out as every man and his dog releases a portable video player. The solution - release one of their own! The "CG-PMPPOD" comes with a 7" wide LCD screen, 20GB HDD and supports WMV9, DivX4/5, QT6, MP3 and WMA. It all sounds a bit familiar though. Does anyone know if this is just a re-badge of someone else's player?

Corega released the "CG-PMPPOD", a portable video player with a 7" wide LCD screen and 20GB HDD, on 15 Feburary. It has no fixed retail price but will sell for 59,800 yen through Corega's direct sales website.

The portable video player is equipped with a 720 x 480 7" TFT LCD panel and a 1.8" 20GB HDD. Supported video formats are WMV9 (352 x 288 / 30 fps), QuickTime 6 (640 x 480 / 30 fps), DivX 4.x/5.1/5.2 (720 x 480 / 30 fps) and DivX 3.11 (352 x 288 / 30fps). Using the supplied AV output (composite video / analog audio), video stored on the HDD can be displayed on a TV or monitor.

AV input is also supported via composite video and analog audio jacks. Video can be captured in MPEG-4 SP format ( 704 x 240 / 25 fps) using just the player unit. Recording of MP3 audio is also possible (32 kHz sampling rate, 48/96/192kbps bit rates) via the audio input jack or internal microphone.

Music playback in MP3 and WMA formats is supported. Images in JPEG (unlimited resolution), BMP (max 1500 x 1200) or GIF (max 800 x 600) format can also be displayed. Image files must be 6MB or less in size.

USB 2.0 is used for PC connectivity. The player is a storage-class device and comes with "MManager" file management software. USB host functionality is not supported. Power is provided by an internal lithium-ion battery which provides up to 3 hours of video playback or 12 hours of audio playback.

The player is 115 x 192 x 28 mm in size and weighs approximately 570 grams. Accessories include earphones, protective case, stand, and screen cleaner.

That's a pretty sorry resolution for WMV9. I thought WMV9 implemented WMVHD, which goes up to 1080p resolutions?? Why would they bother implementing WMV9 if they're not going to support the entire standard?
