Overview
A play on the Japanese word "sasu," for "stick," the "Sastik -0MB Reloaded" is a "PC functionality portability device." So exactly what does that mean?
Say, for example, you'd like to access a file from your home computer while at a hotel. Simply copying the file to the Sastik will enable you to again access this file from a different computer. "Hey, wait a minute, that's what USB memory does, and I already have one of those." You'd be right. The Sastik -0MB Reloaded ponies up much of the same functionality as a USB memory device, as far as universal file accessibility is concerned.
USB memory is great for transporting files, but what about other things on your computer? For example, your address book? E-mail? Favorites? Logins to various websites? Sharing settings? This is where the Sastik -0MB Reloaded comes in. By simply inserting the Sastik into any Windows PC with a USB port and internet connection, all of these items will be accessible. The functionality doesn't stop there, though; it can also give access to your wallpaper, has file encryption/decryption capabilities, and be password protected.
When you're done using the PC, simply remove the Sastik -- everything will be back to normal.
The "0MB" in the Sastik's name refers to the device's actual capacity; the USB keychain simply stores the Sastik host program, which connects to the Sastik server, which contains everything above. Because of this, Sastik provides 8MB of free webspace to every SASTIK 0MB user.
Perhaps what's best about the Sastik is its price. At 1,980 yen (about $18 USD), this is quite a nice solution for people who frequently have to use other computers.
Reasoning
We really liked the Sastik -0MB Reloaded, due to its plain and simple approach, powerful featureset, and low cost. Although there has been plenty of software providing the same sort of "remote access" capabilities as the Sastik, they had some hurdles most users simply couldn't get over: the overly technical setup requirements and need to keep your computer on at all times.
By providing users with a simple drag-and-drop interface to manage their files and easily accessible capabilities (screenshots show the Sastik software is accessible through the system tray), the Sastik is probably the most straightforward approach we've seen to consumer-level settings portability. While the 8MB of server space is admittedtly skimpy, we're hoping all you store in the space is critical items; such as a document template or two. The Sastik obviously isn't intended as a replacement to USB memory devices.
For someone such as myself who often is forced to use computers at the labs on my college campus, this would be an excellent way to access my favorites, address book, and so on while I don't have access to this desktop. I suspect this device would appeal to desktop owners in particular, because we're often stranded when it comes to files.
