We've heard of NXT SoundVu technology used before, but I believe this is the first time it's being used on a mobile phone. Nor will it probably be the last time we hear of it.

For those of you who missed it, NXT SoundVu is a technology developed by England's "New Transducers," which allows the display itself to act as a speaker.

NTT DoCoMo has developed the "N506iS" Mova handset, which features a "Flat Panel Speaker," allowing the entire display panel to vibrate and thus create sound. The release date has not yet been finalized.

This "N506iS" is a Mova handset created by NEC, that uses a dual-axis hinge "Reverse Style." The main display is a 2.4" 240 x 345 dot (QVGA + size) TFT LCD capable of displaying 262,144 colors. Thanks to "NXT SoundVu" technology by England's New Transducers, it also has a function called "Flat Panel Speaker," allowing sound to come from this display. This function allows audio during movie playback and so forth to be heard from the display, and because sound also comes out during a call, simply bringing the display to your ear allows conversation to take place wherever.

Also, continuing from last year's "N605i," this handset also uses a "Reverse Style" by use of a dual axis hinge. The handset is equipped with a "Shuttle Key" to the left of the screen, allowing items such as i-Mode and mail to be viewed even if the screen of the phone is closed and screen exposed. In Reverse Style, camera-related functions can also still be used.

On the reverse of the key side of the body lies an effective 1.3MP CCD camera (1.23MP recorded). When taking a picture, a function called the "Any Number Shutter" can be used, allowing not only the "OK" key and "Shuttle Key" to release the shutter, but also the number keys. It is also equipped with a function called the "Japanese Support Access Reader," enabling users to look up words in the phone's preloaded dictionary by simply taking a picture of them with the camera. Other functions include output of recorded still images or movies to a TV with the "Flat-Type AV Output Cable P01," sold seperately.

According to DoCoMo, "most functions are the same as the N506i." However, newly included is the "Flat Panel Speaker" and "Any Number Shutter."

The size of the handset is 104 x 50 x 24mm (H x W x T), and it weighs roughly 130g. The continuous idle time is 420 hours, and the continuous talk time is 145 minutes. A miniSD card can be used as removable storage, though one is not included in the package. Red x Black, Blue x Silver, and White x Silver body colors will be available.
