Occasionally, the Japanese tech news sites turn up something not available elsewhere - like a pic of the new iPod-compatible car AV unit from Clarion! The unit will support control of the Apple iPod via its 7" wide touch-screen LCD, as well as power supply and charging functions.

Clarion will begin sales of the "iPod-compatible DVD/Wide 7" AV center unit", a car AV unit that supports control of Apple's HDD audio player via a touch-screen LCD, in North America from January 2005.
The "AV center unit" connects to the iPod via a special cable and displays the iPod LCD contents and control keys on its 7" LCD screen. The iPod is controlled via the AV center's LCD touch-screen display. The unit is also equipped with power supply and charging functions for the iPod.
Beginning with sales in North America, Clarion plans to gradually introduce more car audio and navigation products that support the iPod to places such as Japan and Europe. Clarion also plans to supply these products as OEM equipment to car manufacturers.
According to Apple's director of iPod Product Marketing, Stan Ng, "the car is one of the favourite places to listen to music and Clarion's innovative solutions allow music lovers another option for easily listening to iPod in their car." The iPod-compatible "AV center unit" will be displayed at the "2005 International CES" in Las Vegas.

"displays the iPod LCD contents" I wonder what this implies? Does that mean that, for example, it will display photos on the LCD if your iPod Photo is currently displaying a photo? |

i think the whole click wheel is an intuitive interface for a handheld object but a touch screen that you have to circle around over and over again??? ipods lick balls anyways. |

You idiot! Why would you circle over and over again?? I bet you have difficulty operating light switches! iPods are cool. we'd all lick our balls if we could. |

the iPod scroll is cool, but it's a ***** to handle while driving. can't someone figure something else out? a better way to navigate through 10000 songs? i'm too tired to do it right now |

Wouldn't something utilizing the treemaps concept be doable? For example, a certain region of the screen shows songs in the "rock" genre, another region shows the "classical" genre...and once you select your genre, you then choose the album based on its album cover. |

I am utterly amazed by this product. It is stunning! I am curious how smoothly scrolling will be with no mechanical parts. How would it work with a standard touch-screen? Can you do the "wheel" motion with this product? OMG!!! |

why not put something usefull like a navigation system... the pioneer avic n1 does much more things then just display an ipod interface... if you have a 7 inch monitor im sure you dont want to be staring at the white ipod interface... and some in-dash car stereos play mp3's already with there own interface that are customizable... |

Great so now A: you can't adjust your heater while you're listening to music because the little popup screen covers your controls. and B you have an audio player you can't control by feel anymore. No more reaching down and hitting next without taking your eyes off the road. Just what I want is more drivers watching thier car stereo instead of the road ahead of them. Finally C: Why the hell do the iPod car products require a cable? Why can't i dock the damned thing. I want to stick it in like I used to insert a caset not fumble around in my glove box push all my junk aside, spilingl pens and napkins on the floor every time I want to get in and out of the car. Hondas have those terrible stereos with the cdplayer and a tape deck. I want something the same form factor but with better audio components and an iPod slot where the Luddites put the casset deck. people who don't have enough dash for a stereo that big will have to suffer with the cable in their glove box. |

"I am curious how smoothly scrolling will be with no mechanical parts." Ipods have no mechanical parts in the scroll interface, it's all by touch, so it should be exactly the same. |

"people who don't have enough dash for a stereo that big will have to suffer with the cable in their glove box" people who can't afford a car without a dash probably wont afford this stereo either. You can't design a car stereo that will conform to every vehicle. |

Wel, actually, that's the idea of DIN sizing. This deck is a single DIN size. Any car with either a single din, or double din spacing will fit this deck without any problem. it just slides in and fits like a glove. |
