Toshiba will release a new portable DVD player in December that boasts a 1024 x 600 8.9" wide LCD display. The screen of the "SD-P2700" can also be rotated 180 degrees clock-wise and laid flat for some DVD viewing "tablet-style". I bet you Scoble would love that. The "SD-P2700" will retail for approximately 70,000 yen.

Toshiba will begin sales of a portable DVD player with a 8.9" LCD screen, the "SD-P2700", in early December. It will have no set retail price but the street price is expected to be approximately 70,000 yen.

The SD-P2700 is an upgraded version of the 7" wide LCD screen-equipped "Portalo SD-P1400" portable DVD player that was released in April 2004. It uses a 1024 x 600 pixel, 8.9" low-temperature poly-silicon wide LCD, which is the highest resolution screen in its class made by Toshiba. DVD video signals are transferred directly to the LCD without analog conversion using Toshiba's "Direct Digital Playback" technology.

In addition to DVD-Video, the player also supports playback of 2-channel DVD-Audio. WMA/MP3 files recorded on CD-R can also be played back. Image files can be displayed from flash memory inserted into the unit's SD/MMC/MemoryStick slot. However, video playback from flash memory is not supported.

The included battery pack provides up to 3.5 hours of continuous playback. If desired, the monitor section can be rotated 180 degrees clockwise and laid flat for viewing. The available outputs are AV (composite video + stereo sound), S1-video, D2-video, optical/coaxial digital audio x 1 and headphone x 2. The player can also be used for progressive DVD playback. However, only support for AV input (composite video + stereo sound) is provided.

The external dimensions of the player are W259 x D193 x H35 mm and its weight is 1.2 kg (1.5 kg including battery). Accessories such as a soft case are included. An outdoor kit (3000 yen) that can be used to mount the player to a car's rear seat and a TV tuner kit (5000 yen) will also be available.
