Sony has updated the flagship model in their "type U" mobile PC range. The new "VGN-U71P" has a faster 1.1GHz Pentium M CPU, a larger 30GB HDD and the maximum 512MB RAM. It can all be yours for just 199,800 yen from a Sony Style store or website near you - as long as it's in Japan.

Sony will begin sales of a new model in their "VAIO type U" mobile PC series with an upgraded CPU and HDD, the "VGN-U71P", from 6 December. The new model will be available from Sony Style only and will retail for 199,800 yen. It will come with Windows XP Professional (SP2).

A successor to the Sony Style "VGN-U70P" model, the new PC has a Dothan-core Pentium M 733 (1.10GHz) CPU and a 30GB HDD (previous model: 20GB). The maximum 512MB of RAM is also installed. The external appearance is unchanged.

In addition, the "LIBRIe LE for Windows Version 1.1" e-book viewing software is included. The software is a special edition for the VAIO type U and supports the type U's "rotate style", single page display in portrait mode and touch panel operation. It is planned to also allow users of the previous model to download the software.

Other functions and accessories are the same as the previous model - 800x600 (SVGA) 5" transflective touch-panel TFT clear black LCD, Intel 855GM chipset, IEEE 802.11b/g wireless LAN etc. A folding keyboard and port replicator are also included.

The lithium-ion polymer battery provides up to 6 hours of battery life. Dimensions are W167 x D26.4 x H108 mm and weight is approx. 550 grams.

Sales of the Celeron M 900MHz CPU-equipped "VGN-U50" lower-spec model will continue.
