Keeping with the theme of this week, we're introducing another new feature called "Size Matters." Thanks to sar7501 for the name idea...it works on so many levels.

Anyway, "Size Matters" compares the sizes of products to other similar products and everyday items. You'll see that here at TechJapan we report on product dimensions for nearly every article; for mobile devices/handheld in particular, size really does matter.

So, to kick things off, we've got some actual size images of the Nintendo DS and PSP, and will be comparing the size of each device to a DVD.

I had planned on writing a little diddy up about the size differences between the DS and PSP, but I think the pics and numbers speak for themselves.

Normally, I'd have a couple more images for you -- such as height and depth comparisons (the above images only really compare widths). Unfortunately, Nintendo DS images are few and far between. Still, with a 1cm difference between the heights and 5mm difference between the thicknesses, I don't think this should bother anyone too much.

Also, that Nintendo DS image is going from the widest point in the image. It should be 149mm, but this could vary depending on your screen size and resolution. That's why I put in the images of the blank disc.

Very informative.

I've heard someone say "I'm getting a PSP, the DS is too big." But from looking at it, they appear to be pretty close, with the PSP being a little longer and slimmer and the DS being a little thicker and shorter.

One good point about the DS is that when it's closed, the screens are protected. Without a screen protector or some folding case for the PSP, I would not carry it in my pocket... too dangerous for the screen.

Hehe, can I offer you some advice? Why don't you actually OPEN the DS and measure it that way? I really don't care how big the DS is when its closed and in my backpack. I want to know how big the thing is when I am holding it and playing it. That's why people say the DS is too big. Cause it is big when it's opened and you are playing it. It's at least twice the size of the GBA SP. The GBA SP was a brilliant design to begin with though.

Glad to see the feedback!

Thanks for the advice. I certainly would have posted some more effective size comparisons for the DS, but as I mentioned, there really weren't any "profile" pics available for it as they were available for the PSP. Nintendo's official DS pictures are taken at the 25 degree angle (or whatever it is) that the closed image of it is. Here's Nintendo's "official" pic of the DS, open:

Here's a better pic of the Nintendo DS open:

Also, here are some pics comparing the size of the Nintendo DS to Gameboy Advance and Advance SP:

As you can see, the DS is about the same size as the Gameboy Advance when closed. When open, it's a bit smaller than two Gameboy Advance SPs side-by-side (approx. 1.75 SPs wide). Considering it has two 3" LCDs, I think Nintendo have done a pretty good job in keeping the size down.

McCoy,

The PSP has a protective coating applied to the LCD screen so that will give some degree of protection. This was mentioned in Part 2 of the PSP developer interview:

As for a case, the PSP Value Pack (26,040 yen) comes with one or you can buy one separately (with a hand-strap) for 2,000 yen. See here for a pic:

Coating... but if it's not a replaceable film, I think it's the same. Maybe it's more difficult to scratch it, but if it gets scratched... there's no way of getting rid of it. What I mean is a removable screen protector, that when it get scratched can be replaced for a new one, so the display will look brand-new again.

The value pack looks pretty good with that soft case though.

The DS is very awkward to hold when you open it up. Most of the time I have to rest it either on my lap or on a desk if I play over 20 min or so. I also don't consider it very pocket friendly, too big unless you got some baggy pants :P. I think PSP would be easier to hold since center of gravity isn't really shifted like the DS when its open. Screen protection is a non-issue you can get one of those clear stickers to protect your screen if you're that protective of such devices.

you can't scratch the PSP's screen (coating) unless you REALLY work at it.
