Sharp Corporation announced it has developed a 1/1.8" 8 megapixel CCD on 26 October. The RJ21V3BA0ET is the industry's highest resolution interline CCD of its size. Samples will ship from the end of October with full-scale production to begin from January 2005.

Sharp Corporation announced it has developed a 1/1.8" 8 megapixel CCD on 26 October. Samples will ship from the end of October with full-scale production to begin from January 2005. The sample price is 8,400 yen.
The interline CCD has been designated the "RJ21V3BA0ET" and has a primary colour filter and a 9mm diagonal sensor. It has a total resolution of 8.5 megapixels (3,382 x 2,513) and an effective resolution of 8.29 megapixels (3,320 x 2,496). Using micro manufacturing and image pixel reduction technology, the RJ21V3BA0ET is the industry's highest resolution interline CCD of its size.
Most current 8 megapixel-class compact digital cameras use a 2/3" CCD sensor (11 mm diagonal).
The CCD uses 2.2 μm square pixels and has a sensitivity of 90 mV (TYP.). It is capable of recording VGA-size, 30fps video and is packaged in a 32-pin SOP (Small Outline Package).
The CCD can be integrated with the "LR38674" CCD peripheral IC and "LR38669Y" 1-chip signal processing LSI to form a 3-chip system solution. By offering a image recording, signal processing, LCD monitor and memory card output interface systems, the new CCD will support the reduction of development times and device miniaturisation.

The press release also mentions that it's capable of recording VGA-size (640 x 480) movies at 30 frames per second. Nice. |

It didn't mention if this is 30p or 30i. 30i is more likely, sigh. |
